Frequently asked questions
How long should a title tag be?
Google truncates titles by pixel width, roughly 580 pixels on desktop. That is usually 50 to 60 characters. Keep the most important words at the start in case Google shortens it.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for roughly 140 to 160 characters. Google may show more or less depending on the query and device, and sometimes writes its own description from page content.
Why does Google change my title?
Google rewrites titles it considers unhelpful, too long, keyword-stuffed or inconsistent with the page's main heading. A concise, accurate title that matches your H1 is rewritten less often.
